08 Jun The Best Options for Soundproof Window Treatments

Noise reducing shades

When you live in a city like New York–the city that never sleeps–hearing street noise from your apartment is almost a given. Whether it’s the friendly conversation of passersby, the blaring horns of a taxi, or the sirens of emergency vehicles, there’s a good chance your life will be set to an urban soundtrack.

But, that doesn’t mean you have to live with it permanently. If the environmental noise becomes distracting or unbearable, there are things you can do to make your home space quieter. Our suggestion? Sound-blocking window treatments. Though no window treatments are 100 percent soundproof, adding an extra layer of insulation between indoors and out can make a difference in the volume of the street noise heard in your apartment.

Here, a few options for noise-deafening window treatments.

1. Blackout drapery. By nature, blackout curtains are thick and heavy to keep out light. But, this also makes them effective at blocking out noise, too. The heavier the drape (double lined is a must), and the weightier the fabric (think velvet, not linen), the better the noise insulation will be.

2. Cellular shades. Cellular shades, or honeycomb shades, are known for their insulation properties; They are a common recommendation for homeowners looking to reduce heating and air conditioning bills. In addition to temperature insulation, the honeycomb construction also allows cellular shades to offer superior noise insulation, and a lighweight, airy look, as well.

3. Sound-reducing blinds or shutters. Last but not least: sound-reducing blinds (sometimes called acoustical or insulated blinds), or interior window shutters. If you opt for blinds, choose vertical styles in a thick construction. Shutters should cover the entire interior surface of the windows.

4. Double up. For even more efficient soundproofing, consider pairing soundproof shades or blinds and blackout drapery together.
